March 30th, 2021 - MUSA's Statement in Light of Recent Events on the AAPI Community
The Merage Undergraduate Student Association stands in solidarity with the members of the AAPI community and against the recent rise in hateful and violent attacks. We condemn these divisive events that have exponentially spread Anti-Asian sentiments while disrupting an inclusive future for all. To those affected in these trying times, our hearts go out to you and your loved ones.
It is important to remember that these acts of hate stem from an issue that has long been internalized throughout history and does not solely affect the AAPI community. This is a deeply-rooted, systemic racism that has been unequivocally harming minority lives for far too long.
We therefore feel that it is all the more integral to use our platform to condemn these acts of hate and racism, amplify ways in which you all can help to make a difference, and commit in taking action ourselves in creating a more inclusive community within the Paul Merage School of Business.
Moving forward as a student body representative of our Merage community, we will be making an effort to incorporate holistic approaches to create an inclusive space for everyone. Currently, organizations in our community like Lambda Phi Nu have launched fundraising efforts to donate to Stop AAPI Hate. MUSA’s Executive Board will be working these next few weeks to dedicate a section of our website to centralize resources and opportunities for you to take action within your community. Our long-term goals include pushing for discussions on the diversity measures the MUSA affiliated organizations can take to foster an inclusive space for learning and growth within their respective spaces, as well as highlighting the minority experience (in the workforce, with racial discrimination, and identity in general) through events and initiatives.
Above all, it is necessary for us all to do our part to support the AAPI community in light of these trying circumstances, along with other minority groups in our fight for inclusion. Whether this comes in the form of using our own social platforms to share resources, supporting local Asian/BIPOC-owned businesses, volunteering at community centers, or simply starting a conversation on ways to support diversity and inclusivity in our communities with friends and family, we urge you all to take a stand with us in dissolving the harmful effects of racially discriminatory sentiments.
We realize that our commitment is but a small part of a necessary step we all must take in progressing towards a more inclusive space, so in order to continually better ourselves and serve the student body, we would love to hear from more voices in the Merage community and beyond as well. Please feel free to send us a message via our Instagram @musa.uci or our email [email protected] to express your thoughts, concerns, and additional resources you would like to see spotlighted in the Merage community.

MUSA Executive Board

June 5th, 2020 - MUSA's Statement on Racial Inequality and Diversity
The Merage Undergraduate Student Association unequivocally condemns racism, prejudice, and injustice in any form. The recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd, and the many previous instances of systemic racism and inequality have weighed heavily on our minds. We stand with the Black community both here at UC Irvine and across the United States during these trying times and beyond.
As the official student government body for undergraduates at the Paul Merage School of Business, we felt it is important for us to use our platform and resources to take action on this issue, specifically within our Merage community.
Effective Fall quarter 2020, MUSA will be reevaluating its MUSA affiliation process for clubs and organizations. On-campus business organizations seeking MUSA affiliation must re-apply for member benefits such as access to MUSA’s Fall and Winter Spirit Week, Business Leader Summit, and SPOP Handbook. As a part of this new affiliation program, MUSA will be hosting a two-day diversity & inclusivity training in the Fall that will be mandatory for MUSA affiliated organizations to attend. MUSA’s Executive Board will work with our VP of Diversity, current business clubs, and diversity championing UCI centers & organizations for this training. We hope to bring a multi-faceted approach to this training and take the summer to do our due-diligence. Potential topics of interest are Anti-blackness bias, Pro-blackness training, diversity in the workplace, diversity & inclusivity internships/conferences for students, etc. To our current MUSA affiliated leaders, please reach out to our executive board at [email protected] if you have any additional topic ideas to explore or general suggestions.
Furthermore, MUSA will be releasing a MUSA & Extracurricular Experience Survey in the summer to all BA/BIM students. The purpose of this informal survey is to collect information and feedback on the holistic experience for Merage students. Part of this survey will address school culture, diversity & inclusion at Merage, and provide an opportunity to voice any feedback on how MUSA and the Merage community can do better. We ask all current and graduating Merage students to partake in this survey so we can better address the needs of underrepresented students in our future programming and advocacy with Merage faculty and staff.
We recognize that these actions will not be the end all be all solution to this national issue. However, we believe that MUSA breaking the silence on our part and taking these steps toward promoting diversity and racial inequality education within our Merage community will be a small contribution to a larger movement.

MUSA COVID-19 STATEMENT
In light of recent events, the Merage Undergraduate Student Association is taking precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of our board members and students are met. We have paused our in-person events for the Spring quarter as we reevaluate our options and formulate an alternative approach.
Meanwhile, we hope that you all are staying safe and resilient during this difficult time. The current situation is unprecedented and is something that will be remembered for decades to come. Despite our desire to host events such as Senior Sendoff, we cannot put our fellow peers at risk during this period, and we hope that you all understand the predicament we are currently facing. From everyone on MUSA Board, we wish you all the best and hope you continue to stay positive and strong during these times.
