Major: Business Administration and Informatics Career/Plans after graduation: Business Technology Analyst at Deloitte Consulting Campus Involvements: Students Consulting for Non-Profit Organizations - Project Manager, Lambda Phi Nu - Mentorship Director Favorite hobby/past-time: Playing Pool at ZotZone How have your personal and professional mentors allowed to develop as an individual?: My mentors from Lambda Phi Nu and SCNO have really given me the confidence that it took to develop myself for a career in consulting, before I met them I was very lost in terms of my career and personal life. They also showed me through their actions that the best thing a UCI student can do is help another UCI student. Advice to the Business Administration majors: Reach out to the older students, alumni, and anyone else in your network. The more you know the better off you will be in the long run. SHOVAN DATTA | FALL 2014 WEEK 9 Year: 4th
Major: Business Administration major with a specialization in Marketing. Career/Plans after graduation: I plan to work in the marketing or brand management department for a large multinational organization. Currently I work for Red Bull and would love to transition into a full-time position at their headquarters in Santa Monica, California. Campus Involvements: Pi Kappa Alpha - External Vice President Favorite hobby/past-time: Playing water polo, Watching "First Take" on ESPN Describe how some of your on-campus commitments have contributed to your professional or personal success: Other than allowing me to meet some of my best friends at UCI, I have learned much about myself through my on-campus commitments. My role as the external vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha helped me understand how to manage people of many different backgrounds, how to effectively lead others, and how to be an effective communicator. Other than the leadership skills I acquired, one of the most important lessons I learned was having the courage to admit failure and then learn from it. Advice to the Business Administration majors: Never be afraid to make mistakes. Due to the opportunity to grow and learn from the failure you encounter, a mistake will only remain to be a mistake if you do not learn from it. This quarter, one of my professors, Bill Morris, explained the importance of making mistakes best by saying, "To walk through the door of success, one must first walk through the door of failure." Thus, don't be scared to fail, rather embrace failure because with every mistake comes an opportunity for growth. Sometimes one's best successes could come at the heels of failure. |

Major: Business Administration major with an emphasis in Marketing. Career/Plans after graduation: Do marketing and strategy work for a corporation with a dedicated culture. Get an MBA. Start a family. Give back. Campus Involvements: SAGE Scholars (Student Achievement Guided by Experience) Favorite hobby/past-time: AYCE Sushi Describe how your extracurricular involvements have affected your experience at the university: I attended various networking events and workshops. This is where I absorbed new perspectives on familiar topics as well as sharpened my professional skills. It's was a great way to experiment and become more well-rounded since classrooms have a narrow scope. Advice to the Business Administration majors: Know the difference between being professional and being uptight. Remember that others have to work with you. Trust yourself. You made it this far, so more than likely you'll find a way to figure it all out. Give everyone and everything a chance. Don't be so quick to judge or turn down. Hear people out. Major: Business Administration major with emphases in Finance and Accounting Minor: German Studies and Psychology & Social Behavior. Career/Plans after graduation: Currently interviewing for roles in corporate finance and consulting in the San Francisco area. Campus Involvements: Delta Sigma Pi, Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations (SCNO) Favorite hobby/past-time: Reading Dystopian novels Describe how your extracurricular involvements have affected your experience at the university: The organizations I've been involved in have opened my eyes to the different industries out there and the available careers. They've helped me grow professionally and personally, providing me with new friends who I laugh with and learn from. Advice to the Business Administration majors: Don't waste time. You have three summers before having to look for a full-time job, so start networking and figure out what you're passionate about. At first you will make mistakes, but with more interviews and more networking you will make fewer mistakes. By the time you are interviewing for your dream job, you will not just be better than the other candidates, but you will be the ideal candidate they have always been looking for. |

The Merage School offers a stimulating environment filled with all the necessary resources needed for students to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. It’s full of opportunities for undergraduates to pursue all their passions, beliefs, and dreams through the school’s dedication to individual attention, a challenging curriculum, and extracurricular activities. Through my involvements with the Merage School, I’ve been able to explore my strengths and discover endless opportunities that I’ve never dreamed of before. Advice to Business Administration Majors: Get involved early, form meaningful relationships, and pursue what you love! From joining an organization to studying abroad, researching, working, or participating in a competitive team; there are countless opportunities available for students! Don’t hesitate to do anything just because you’re afraid or because it’s out of your comfort zone. Take a chance and don’t look back. UCI is the perfect place for people to make mistakes and to learn from them. Remember to enjoy the journey, be kind, and cherish each moment along the way. |

Due to my involvements, I had the chance to explore various career paths in different industries and hone my communication skills. I had the chance to meet many different people who inspired me to find my passion and challenged me to become a better person. Advice to the Business Administration majors: There are so many ways to professionally and personally grow during your short time at UCI. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to a stranger, chat with a career counselor, or join a club. There are countless opportunities at UCI and in Orange County. Be open to these new experiences. And if opportunity doesn't knock, build a door! |
