CHERISH CORPUZ | SPRING 2014 WEEK 9 Year: 2nd
Major: Business Administration Campus Involvements: Member of Delta Sigma Pi, Equity and Fixed Income Analyst of Student Managed Investment Fund, Member of Anteater Business Brigades Hobbies: During my free time, I enjoy hiking and going on spontaneous road trips The Importance of Extracurriculars: I started getting involved in extracurricular activities since my fall quarter freshmen year. Since I moved from Hawaii just for college, I was worried that I would not fin in. I wanted to meet as many people as I could to enhance my university experience. After pledging for Delta Sigma Pi, I felt like I had a home away from home. My pledge class may be unconventional but we love each other and support each other and I know they will be there for every significant moment I go through in college. My other involvements in SMIF and Anteater Business Brigades has helped me explore my career options and even gave me the opportunity to travel to Honduras. I would not have all these opportunities without joining these extracurricular activities. Advice for Merage students: I advise all Business Administration majors to get involved and meet as many people as possible. It's good to get out of your comfort zone and look for internships, join various organizations, attend networking events, participate in workshops, and anything else that will allow you to interact with others. I would not be the person I am if it wasn't for the people I have met in college. I am so grateful for the friends I've made and my mentors who helped me find what I am passionate about. Plans after graduation: I am pursuing a career in a nonprofit organization. It is my dream to work as a Fellows Program Manager at KIVA and to follow my passion to educate and promote economic justice. I love to travel and I hope to be sent on programs to help micro enterprises around the world. |
TONY LI | SPRING 2014 WEEK 8 Year: 3rd
Major: Business Administration major with a concentration in accounting Campus Involvements: Alpha Kappa Psi – Vice President of Finance, International Peer Group – Peer Mentor and Coordinator, SPOP – Staff Leader, UC Irvine Extension – Activities Lead, Discussion Leader Program – Discussion Leader, Accounting Association – Member Hobbies: enjoy playing basketball (I taught Jeremy Lin everything I knew), reading self-help books/looking at Ted Talks, and watching the Lakers lose (one of my more favorite hobbies this season). Describe how your career and organizational experiences have affected your overall professional development: The biggest indicator in my professional development was definitely a growth in confidence. I came into college unsure of myself and lacked a sense of self-worth. I had always thought that I wasn’t good enough, and therefore remained complacent and unmotivated. However, after joining multiple campus involvements including my business fraternity, I surrounded myself with people that provided the support system that I needed. Slowly, I began seeing the value in myself. This new outlook changed my life – I began seeking what I actually wanted because I realized I was good enough. The leadership positions that I took on led to internship opportunities, and I now have a better direction in terms of my career goals. Advice to Merage Students: Some practical advice I have to offer would be on dealing with stress. I watched a Ted Talk by Kelly McGonigal that changed my perspective on the whole idea of stress. She first introduces a statistic – in an experiment, subjects who stressed out more than those who didn’t died at an earlier age. This makes sense. However, this trend occurred only in people who saw stress as bad. In fact, the subjects who saw stress as a positive thing, as a means of motivation and strength, lived longer and healthier lives than subjects who did not stress at all. The next time you are stressed out, the next time you feel your palms start to sweat and your heart beat faster than usual, try rethinking your perception of the situation. Try perceiving it as your body energizing you and preparing you for a challenge. Because once you do this, stress no longer makes you anxious and nervous; instead, it makes you courageous. Plans after graduation: In the short-run, I intend to work for a public accounting firm after I graduate college and specialize in audit. This would help me gain hard skills, be exposed to multiple industries, and develop credibility as a CPA. In the long-run, it would be awesome if I could start my own small business. As small business owners, my parents made a living for themselves by creating something from scratch. Though I have decided not to follow their footsteps by taking over their business, I do want to emulate their entrepreneurial mindsets. |
TIFFANY KHAU | SPRING 2014 WEEK 7 Year: 4th

Although I have been dancing most of my life, I'm not very good. Fortunately, I have been able to continue dancing anyways. I have made great friends and met many amazing people through dance, and I hope to continue to do so for the rest of my life. Hopefully, one day the grace from dance will transfer into my daily life, and I will stop walking into things and tripping over nothing. How has Merage helped you? Coming into UCI as Undecided/Undeclared, I realized what a significant impact being in the Paul Merage community has been. The Merage community provides the opportunity for the small school feel, with individualized attention from faculty and staff, while still providing the vast amount of opportunities of a big research-oriented school here at UCI. Merage students have the best spring board for their own professional development through the many business clubs and organizations as well as connecting with their exceptional peers. I am extremely grateful to be a part of this school and will cherish the time I have spent here. Advice for Merage students Life is what you make it, so go out there and get involved in anything that catches your interest, whether it be business-related or not. The years pass by very quickly. Find what makes you happy and go after it. Plans after graduation: This summer, I will be interning at HCVT as a tax intern. In the fall, I will be coming back to UCI as graduate student in the Master of Professional Accountancy Program in the fall. |
ALEXANDER FUNG | SPRING 2014 WEEK 6 Year: 2nd

I enjoyed being a liaison to the student body and I loved educating the students on important matters. This passion has motivated me to run for the Business Representative seat on the ASUCI Legislative Council in the ASUCI Fall 2013 election. Even with zero competition during the election, I did not hesitate on campaigning. After being more politically involved, my passion in serving the students began to motivate me to be more active in my involvements. I advocated for equality and transparency in all of my involvements, bringing the leaders and members closer to each other. Due to this passion, the brothers of my fraternity re-elected me as the Secretary of my fraternity during Fall 2013. I started to be driven by the thought to benefit the students and the community. During December, I was recruited as the Internal Director of Marketing Association for my experience and interest in marketing. Despite the fact that my life became more career-oriented when I became more involved with Marketing Association, I never lost the passion in serving the students and advocating for student concerns. I understand that the world we live in has many problems and is not close to perfection. As a Business Administration major, I was taught many ways for businesses to maximize profits in my management classes. However, they rarely teach me on how to make the world a better place. Through understanding the workings of businesses, I believe that a better world with equality and transparency can be achieved through positive adjustments. Advice for Merage students: Don't let the world change who you are. Rather, you can do anything you set your mind to. Plans after graduation: Working full-time for a marketing firm then proceeding to an MBA program after a few years |

I love how the Paul Merage School of Business places a heavy emphasis on growth, community, and relationships. Merage students receive individualized attention from highly qualified staff that are invaluable to academic and professional development. Furthermore, the various business clubs and organizations within the Merage school are wonderful ways to connect with like-minded individuals who motivate, encourage, and strengthen you. I am so grateful for the Merage community, as well as for the memories and experiences I have shared with my peers. Advice for Merage students: Although networking with professionals, asking for resume critiques, and preparing for interviews are all important steps in pursuing career-related experiences, I believe that self-exploration is crucial as you begin to map out your careers. I encourage you to become involved in organizations and seek out experiences that allow you to better define your passion and goals. Finding people that you can learn from and that can assist you in identifying your strengths will help you gain a better understanding of how YOU can be a valuable asset to a company. Once you establish confidence in yourself, you'll be better equipped as you begin pursuing career-related experiences Plans after graduation: I aspire to apply my two passions to a career in which I can investigate fraud and other white-collar crimes through an accounting lens. In Fall 2014, I will be joining Deloitte and Touche's FAS practice as a Forensics Associate based in San Francisco. A few years into the future, I hope to transition into a career with the FBI or a similar government agency. |
